Zotero AI plugins that work without an API key
106 of the 408 AI plugins we list work without an API key. 35 need no key at all, and 71 work without one but need a key for some services. 57 of them can use a local model, such as one running in Ollama, so your text needn't leave your computer.
What the labels mean
- No API key needed
- Nothing in it needs a key you supply. It may still send your text to a service, so check "Where your data goes" on its card.
- API key optional
- It works without one, but some of the services it offers need a key. The card lists which.
- Can use a local model
- It can use a model running on your own computer, such as Ollama, so your text needn't leave it.
Each answer has to quote the plugin's own documentation or code, and a second, independent check has to agree. 20 more AI plugins can use a local model but still ask for a key, and for 179 we couldn't tell, so they aren't listed here. Every AI plugin is in AI & summaries.
